The hand that rocks the Clorox wipes in winter . . .
. . . is the hand that lotion cannot penetrate, the hand with skin that cracks and bleeds and then stains clothing, and the hand that looks as pathetic and worn as the rest of the woman attached that hand feels (and probably looks too).
What are you hands doing during these long winter days?
Carry on.

my hands have been idol, ntb, since I have been on vaca. I think you definitely need a less harsh cleaner or a pair of gloves. try vaseline on clean han ds before bed and maybe that will stop the cracking, bleeding, and subsequent staining. I am very sad looking at your hands, hope you get the house in shape soon. m
I'm all Aquaphor, all the time. But I'm all Purell, all the time, too (flu season!). One look at my hands tells you these strategies kind of cancel each other out. So I'm just waiting for spring. I'd even settle for a tiny warm front.
I'd send you a picture of mine, but they are the stuff of nightmares. I've found that a nightly dose of 'heel crack cream' works quite well. Stings like merry hell, but it does actually work. You have to get the one with the highest percentage of urea in it that you can... or pee on them, perhaps that would work, too.
Ouch!
I got a special cream from the dermatologist because my hands get so bad in the winter. It really, really helps.
My hands are raw as well, more from wiping butts and changing diapers which results in washing my hands more than the average chap. Swiper has some sore hands too and it really is hard to find something to soothe them because lotion just stings.
In fairness, my hands have apparently looked worn for quite some time. In my first job out of college a male coworker informed me I had wrinkled old lady hands and suggested I may want to do something about that. (Thank you Brad.) He did have a point, but 10 years later, I don't really have a good solution. FYI- they do look normal in the summer though:)
Funny thing... I just took a picture of my hand for my brother to tell me if it looks infected. My look the same. I cracked it open at Target and couldn't find a bandaid in my purse. The three year old was quite concerned. I stopped at customer service to see if they could help. They didn't have any bandaids. Come on it is Target, you have tons of bandaids.
My roommate from college told me she was glad that my hands looked old too. I don't think that was very nice.
AAP
My hands are just as bad (thanks to constant washing and hand sanitizer). There goes my hand modeling gig *sigh*
Oooh, I recognize those cracked open first knuckles. This seems to be a new thing for me this winter. Usually it's just the tops of my hands and my one thumb that I can't ever seem to stop peeling. But I've felt like I am missing skin from the majority of my fingers for months now. Thankfully, my eczema prone children do not seem to be faring too badly.
Try Gold Bond medicated lotion with a pair of cotton gloves or socks at night when you go to bed. this from a microbiologist who washes her hands constantly! it usually works. good luck! Christy
Horrible. I'm on team crack-n-bleed, as well. I use Acey's prescription eczema creme on them when they bleed, and, um, Lasinoh lanoline on them otherwise. As in, the stuff for your nipples. It's great.
Eucerin and Aquaphor...the only two lotions that would even come close to relieving my hands in the winter when I was a nurse in the ICU, washing them every two minutes and then some.
I prescribe a manicure STAT, then lotion-infused gloves which you must keep on for at least a week. I'll send over Alice the housekeeper/nanny to tend to your chores while your hands are healing...
Hope that works :)
You poor thing!!! Is that what I have to look forward to when I become a mom?! Eucerin and Aquaphor sound like good recommendations. I wish you luck.
